The Indonesian currency is called the rupiah (Rp). Notes come in the following denominations: Rp 1,000;   Rp 5,000; Rp 10,000; Rp 20,000; Rp 50,000, and Rp 100,000.

Banks throughout Indonesia can handle foreign currency exchange, and there are plenty of independent money changers as well in the tourist areas. Some provincial banks will not cash traveler’s checks.

Credit cards are accepted in most international hotels and there is a network of bank ATMs across the country with Cirrus-Maestro connections.

Time Zones


Located on the equator, Indonesia has a tropical climate with two seasons: dry and rainy. Temperatures average between 26°C to 30°C (79°F to 86°F) throughout the year, with humidity around 80%.


Bahasa Indonesia is the official language, and is spoken by most Indonesians. Bahasa Indonesia uses the Roman alphabet and has phonetic spelling. English is studied at school.

There are over 742 local dialects; visitors traveling into some of the more remote areas should be prepared to meet locals who can only speak a few words of Bahasa Indonesia.


Indonesia recognizes Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Confucianism. The majority of the population is Muslim (85%), but there are churches and temples throughout the country in addition to mosques.
